Seeing more hip young people than usual on the subway this week? It's that time of year: the CMJ Music Marathon. According to CMJ's web site, more than 120,000 musicians, filmmakers, panelists and others are participating in the event, which runs through Sunday. New York Times pop music critic Jon Pareles helps us sort through this year's bonanza with his picks from the festival so far.

Grooms!! They put on such a consistently solid show. These guys are seriously talented musicians and they make awesomely loud, rocking songs that somehow still manage to be just so... pretty.

A favorite was Pretty Good Dance Moves, a nice surprise on a Wednesday afternoon at Rockwood Music Hall. http://www.sparked.biz/2009/10/22/pretty-good-dance-moves/
