Soprano Renée Fleming has a new album titled Dark Hope, on which she covers indie rock acts like Muse, Arcade Fire, Duffy and the Mars Volta.
In a way, it’s in keeping with “the people’s diva” who sang at President Obama’s inauguration and has previously ventured into jazz. But vocally, it’s a radical departure from her previous work. She talks about the new Fleming voice, rock music, and her career at 51.

I'm always amused by her charm when she sings operatic repertoir.... the jazzy album I kinda liked it because her thickness and richness in her voice is something I cannot scape from. the moment I knew she this cd was about to be out....I didn't know anything about the songs selection but the instant I hit play... I was again without a doubt charmed and can't and wouldn't want to fight this feeling inside.......she caresses my soul with her voice and these tunes. i love renée and will until i died. thank god for her
I finally received my copy of the cd today and it exceeded my expectations which were already high. I think that those who negatively judge this effort without listening to the entire album on a decent stereo system are in danger of missing out on a very exciting experience. Much as I love Renee's classical voice, I also think it's great when she takes us on these adventures.
Wow, I hardly know where to start, there are so many reasons why this is a bad idea. After hearing the clips you played though, it's even worse than I expected.
Leave it to Q Prime to find the right gimmick.
It's great to hear Fleming's thoughts on performing rock music. Often classical musicians look down on popular music but her open-minded observations are refreshing.
Please ask Ms. Fleming what she thinks of reality TV "celebrities" like Real Housewife of New York City "Countess" Delaseps going into a studio and recording "songs". a) Please don't claim you don't know who she is and b) please be honest!! PS - Ms. Fleming has a beautiful voice.
The convergence of Renee's indie album release date AND the Glee season finale has been almost too much for my 13-year old to bear. He's been counting down the days to both with equal excitement since we heard Miss Fleming mention the album at the Metropolitan Museum last month. A member of the Met Opera Children's Chorus, he sends a shout out to Sage.
I've been a fan of Renee for the better part of a decade. I bought the album this morning and LOVE it. Fleming has the best female voice of all time!
that's one hot indie/rock,opera-mama!
