The Gems of Gospel's Golden Age

Thursday, May 06, 2010

How Sweet it Was” is a new DVD/CD set paying homage to the golden age of Christian gospel music.

Created and compiled by gospel historian Anthony Heilbut, the collection features some of the most acclaimed gospel performances in recent history, with numbers by such icons as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, James Cleveland, Alex Bradford, and the Soul Stirrers. Heilbut joins us to share some of the gems.

It seems poor journalistic practice to discuss gospel music without defining the term gospel, acknowledging race or explaining that there is gospel music for liturgy and gospel music for performance/recording. Amy Grant and Casting Crowns have no musical relationship to the gospel singers in Heilbut's compilation. It is unfortunate that you did not feel it necessary to include an African-American scholar, artist or theologian who could explain the way gospel fits into the religious rituals of African-American churches and the larger context of African-American musical forms. I am amazed that in both pieces on gospel music every Black voice utilized was singing. By the time the presenter referred to gospel as 'lots of voices singing together and stuff,' in his Local Native interview, I was so outraged that I felt compelled to write. Lastly, to suggest, with one broad stroke, that gospel musicians were unable to read or write music because they were "uneducated" is to overlook many trained artists who left their mark on the genre. Amongst these is one of the definers of the genre, Thomas Andrew Dorsey, who made a living writing musical arrangements and lead sheets for Ma Rainey before his conversion. Very disappointing indeed.

Really enjoyed this segment. The first video I ever watched on Youtube was one of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, blowing everyone away with her electric guitar. It remains one of my favorites. FYI, here is a link to the actual product on Amazon, rather than the dvd download (your link, above):

Tying your shows together, at Jazzfest years ago, I saw Van Morrison perform. We were thrilled; it was very nice and whatnot, glad I got to see him. THEN, we ducked into the GOSPEL TENT as an escape from the heat and crowds. Holy (expletive)!!! it was insane, the high level of tight performance and the energy level the whole group had. It was just so intense and incredible; not to be missed. If you imagine packing 30 unsung James Browns into a single act.... Marvelous.
