Hear highlights from "JS:30," a Greene Space concert celebrating John Schaefer's 30 years on the air at WNYC. Guests include singer Angelique Kidjo, musician Laurie Anderson, composer Steve Reich and others. Plus: a roast in John's honor.
John Schaefer joined WNYC fresh out of college in December 1981. Thirty years later, the host of Soundcheck and New Sounds is still going strong -- and still wearing t-shirts and jeans. WNYC celebrated John's anniversary with live music and a roast in The Greene Space. Today: John revisits some of the highlights from the "JS:30" concert.
In 1981, a young radio host from Brooklyn came to WNYC. John Schaefer was hired to read newscasts and introduce classical music, but soon found himself hosting a new music show that quickly became the on-air hub of the fertile downtown music scene.
Check out some photos we took at John Schaefer's 30th anniversary event in The Greene Space.
