John's On-Air Anniversary

Thursday, December 15, 2011

John Schaefer joined WNYC fresh out of college in December 1981. Thirty years later, the host of Soundcheck and New Sounds is still going strong -- and still wearing t-shirts and jeans. WNYC celebrated John's anniversary with live music and a roast in The Greene Space. Today: John revisits some of the highlights from the "JS:30" concert.

Hear performances from Laurie Anderson, guitarist Scott Johnson, the string quartet Ethel, pianist Simone Dinnerstein and singer-songwriter Tift Merritt, and the evening's emcee, Angelique Kidjo. Plus: composer Steve Reich recalls his first visit to WNYC in 1982. And: Metropolitan Opera host Margaret Juntwait leads a roast.

This is a great show, one of the very best on public radio, congrats to you on your 30th anniversary.

I love, love, love this show! When I moved to NYC from Boston 8 years ago I thought there was no way the public radio could be as good. Well, Soundcheck was the first program to hook me. I've learned so much about music from you, John. Thank you and happy anniversary!
