The Axe as Art

Tuesday, March 08, 2011

The guitar is the focus of three separate exhibits currently on display in New York. From mixed-media representations by Picasso to exquisitely crafted instruments by luthier John Monteleone, we examine the axe as art with critic and WNYC regular, Carolina Miranda.

John, I know you live in a very monochromatic world with an indie rock soundtrack only occasionally interrupted by a splash of color (and rhythm) but when dealing with history can you really not show even a slight awareness of the world outside your European ancestors? The guitar was not merely preceded by the lute and mandolin (which btw actually isn't a precursor to the guitar at all) but by eastern instruments like the oud and the sitar. Competence please.
