Alt-country singer-songwriter Ryan Adams joins us to explain how “New York, New York,” his country-pop rave-up about heartbreak in the East Village, was transformed by tragedy and triumph. If you've never heard Dear Chicago, try to find it. A gorgeous, heartbreaking song that makes me cry every time I hear it.

I had just moved to London from NY and my first full day in town was Sept. 11th, 2001. Across the Oxford Street from my apartment was a huge HMV record store, and it was there I first saw the video for the song. The store played it on a huge projection screen. Without exception, every single person in the store stopped what they were doing and watched.
It was so quiet for quite a while after it stopped. London didn't seem too effected by the attacks, but that's the one time I can remember the whole city around me catching itself.
