Pinback's Rob Crow performs in the Soundcheck studio.

For musicians, the theft of an instrument can pose a major setback. Entire songs and albums have been structured around the sonic personality of a single instrument. Zach Smith's strummy bass guitar style has helped define the sound of Pinback, the indie band he co-founded with guitarist and fellow vocalist Rob Crow. In September, Smith's custom-made Alembic bass was stolen midway through a gig in the band's hometown, San Diego. That's when drummer Chris Prescott snapped into action.
All three members of Pinback recount the action-packed chase that ensued. Plus: the band plays three songs from their latest album, Information Retrieved, live in the studio.
