Throughout the past several weeks, Soundcheck has been accepting nominations for our first Musician In Chief. Soundcheck's bullpen contributors have nominated musicians, and made a case for why that artist should become the leader of the free world. So far, Keith Richards, Patti Smith, Jay-Z and Dolly Parton have been nominated. Today, Sowmya Krishnamurthy tells us why Sean "Diddy" Combs deserves your vote.
Candidate: Sean "Diddy" Combs
Nominated By: Sowmya Krishnamurthy
Reason For Nomination:
The "Man of Many Monikers," Diddy is the living embodiment of the "American Dream." Since the age of 19, the self-made entrepreneur has overseen a slew of successful business ventures including Bad Boy Records, Sean John clothing and Ciroc vodka yet his astronomic net worth of some $550 million has not caused him to lose tempo with everyday constituents. Diddy spearheaded 2004 "Vote Or Die" movement, encouraging young people and minorities to vote, and also found time to run the New York City marathon, appear in A Raisin In The Sun on Broadway, win an Oscar, and snag a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame -- all by the age of 42.
Like his motto, "Can't Stop, Won't Stop," hip-hop's consummate Renaissance man will bring the platinum touch to America and make our nation great.
Campaign Slogan: "Can’t Stop, Won't Stop"
Probable Running Mate: Jerry Seinfeld (They shared a Forbes cover in 1999).
Core Campaign Issues:
Tax breaks for small businesses, affirmative action, legalize marijuana, healthcare, prison reform, place caps on college tuition.
During first 100 days in office, what will your candidate achieve?
Bolster celebrities to self-fund public works projects to save taxpayers and receive free publicity (e.g. Seinfeld Expressway in NYC, Sean Combs National Parks in Harlem), personally donate $100 million to PBS and invite Big Bird to the Inaugural Address for his kids, legalize marijuana, create a hip-hop history wing at the Smithsonian.
Diddy will dub the White House "The Black House" and have longtime friend Martha Stewart brought in to decorate. During his tenure, Diddy will create a special cabinet consisting of Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rick Ross, etc. to represent minority interests in government. He will also create a retirement account and financial resources for media/entertainment/creative professionals ranging from interns to superstars.
