Though he's a quasi-member of the Arcade Fire, Owen Pallet's own work as Final Fantasy has always skewed stranger and subtler than that of the Montreal septet. "Lewis Takes Action" is an endearing bait-and-switch: The opening beat, cribbed straight from the Ronettes' "Be My Baby," announces the track as an ostensible pop crossover. But bit by bit, Pallett's weirder instincts take over, with splashes of dissonance, enigmatic lyrics like "The stony hiss of cocatrice has cast us into serfdom," and a coda that steers defiantly out of key.
