Gig Alerts: Attack Release

Monday, December 21, 2009

Every weekday, we're offering downloadable songs from artists playing in the New York City area that night. Here's one from a band carrying on the garage rock torch.

Attack Release
"Mortgage"
Playing at: Mercury Lounge
(217 E. Houston St., East Village)
Get: Tickets ($8 at door) | Directions

Inspired by the original garage rock bands of the '60s and the revival groups of the 2000s, Attack Release play the kind of straightforward, pop-twinged indie rock that you sometimes need to hear in an overly Auto-Tuned world. But the song "Mortgage" isn't that simple: a soaring, fuzzy guitar solo toward the end ramps things up, and considering the name of the song, the lyrics - about a love you can't hold on to - seem to have a double meaning in this slowly-recovering economy.
