Jazz pianist Marcus Roberts hails from Florida and is an alumnus of the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind, alma mater of another distinguished musician, Ray Charles. New Orleans Meets Harlem, Vol.1 is his first album in over 8 years.
Marcus lost his sight when he was five, but that didn't deter him from 4 years of self-taught piano lessons. He went on to work with trumpeter Wynton Marsalis for many years. Marsalis even nicknamed Marcus "J-Master" -- short for jazzmaster. He orginally recorded New Orleans Meets Harlem, Vol.1 in 2001 but ever the perfectionist, Marcus wasn't satisfied with the results and waited 8 years to rerecord it to his liking. Marcus is joined by Roland Guerin on bass and Jason Marsalis on drums for a rendition of Duke Ellington's Black and Tan Fantasy.
