Sam Yahel is best known for his skills on the Hammond B3 organ, but for his 2009 album Hometown, Yahel takes a break from the jazz organ and gets back to basics with the piano. On the Thelonious Monk original "Think of One," Yahel and his tight trio hold nothing back. Straight out of the gate, Yahel plunges right into the sprightly opening notes of the melody, setting the tone for his nimble take on the tune. Meanwhile, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Jochen Rueckert back up Yahel with deft, mature performances.
