Playing at: Zebulon (258 Wythe Ave., Williamsburg)
Get: Tickets (donation at door) | Directions
Janka Nabay was known as the king of modern bubu music in his native Sierra Leone. Then in 2002, Sierra Leone's civil war moved him to relocate to the U.S. But before he left, Nabay recorded his signature take on bubu, a Muslim-Sierra Leonean music style, at Freetown's Forensic Studios. The tracks from this session make up his four-song Bubu King E.P. "Eh Congo," with its rapid-fire drum machine beat, ancient rhythmic pulse and multilingual lyrics, captures Nabay's flair for revamping a traditional sound.
