Five years ago this week, Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf Coast and left an indelible mark on thousands of Americans, including on composer Ted Hearne. A practitioner of new music with the heart of an activist, Hearne was moved to write Katrina Ballads, a collection of songs that blends comments made during the week after Katrina with adventurous classical compositions. This piece sets the infamous remarks made by former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert to the tune of an inflamed yet mournful work. Monday night, Hearne will present his award-winning song cycle alongside a new film by Bill Morrison.
