Trombonist Alan Ferber’s music has been described by The Wall Street Journal as “somehow both old-school and cutting-edge,” and that sums it up quite nicely. His nonet has a classic big band sound that could, at times, almost be playing out of the big band Tommy Dorsey songbook, yet his music is also punctuated by unconventional harmonies, wild overblown timbres, and ripping modern jazz solos. This track “Union Blues,” which comes off Ferber's acclaimed Chamber Songs: Music For Nonet and Strings, is reminiscent of Charles Mingus’ large-ensemble sound.
