"We Are MTO"

Trumpeter Steven Bernstein is the type of guy who can't keep still. When he's not arranging film scores or recording with artists as diverse as Aretha Franklin and Tricky, he's leading adventurous jazz ensembles such as the acclaimed Sex Mob and the retro-centric Millennial Territory Orchestra. Inspired by the "territory bands" of the '20s and '30s -- dance bands that toured specific regions of the U.S. -- Bernstein blends characteristics of those groups with modern downtown style. While MTO performs a lot of covers, this title track from their 2008 album is a Bernstein original. Opening with hot-and-bothered violin, the track settles into a funk groove full of high, writhing brass and sultry, stalking bass.
