Taking their inspiration from girl group harmonies, impassioned R&B frontmen, indie pop and funk, Brooklyn's Ava Luna is a genre-defying hot pot of groove. With sparse yet strong percussion, clever synths and heavenly, female doo-wop style backing vocals, the six-piece outfit maintain a spare, raw sound that's simultaneously rich, performing a kind of musical voodoo. On "Past the Barbary," Ava Luna works a complex melody into an infectious, adventurous pop tune with moody movements, enrapturing strings, and soulful vocals courtesy of lead singer Carlos Hernandez.
