Nika Roza Danilova, a.k.a. Zola Jesus, caught the attention of bloggers last year with her singular mix of lo-fi noise and operatic howl. It may seem like a strange mix, but the sound perfectly suits the rural Wisconsin native, who grew up taking opera lessons, reading Nietzsche and listening to avant-gardists the Residents. On "Clay Bodies," Danilova treats her muffled experimentalism with '60s girl group sensibility, belting out a vintage pop-tinged wail over muted piano and steady percussion. The result is a tune that captures what the Ronettes would sound like if they dug post-punk.
