In The Country
"Ursa Major"
Playing at: Le Poisson Rouge
(158 Bleecker St., Greenwich Village)
Get: Tickets | Directions

It is delightfully difficult to categorize this Norwegian group. By all outward appearances, In The Country appears to be a traditional jazz piano trio, but pianist Morten Qvenild, bass player Roger Arntzen and drummer Pål Hausken incorporate so many varied musical styles -- from prog rock to classical -- that the ensemble could easily be filed under just about any genre. "Ursa Major" captures In The Country's defiant creativity with proggish, free jazz-style synthesizers and galloping percussion that climax in a bittersweet finish.
