Armed with a strange and captivating rasp, singer/songwriter and guitarist Mike Wexler plays enigmatic freak folk. On "Southern Cross," Wexler displays his knack for effortlessly melding the rootsy with the psychedelic. The track opens with a Southern gospel-tinged piano and finger-plucked guitar before Wexler comes in with his deep, almost fiendish growl. The foreboding march of the beautifully bizarre melody and Wexler's otherworldly vocals make for a musical experience that is familiar and surreal all at once. Wexler is one of many artists who will be performing over the coming weeks at the soon-to-be-shuttered Monkey Town, which will close its doors on January 24th.
