Vijay Iyer Trio
"Mystic Brew"
Playing at: Le Poisson Rouge
(158 Bleecker St., Greenwich Village)
Get: Tickets | Directions

Pianist Vijay Iyer's Historicity has been lauded as one of the best jazz albums of 2009, and after listening to this track, it will be quite apparent why. Iyer takes keyboardist Ronnie Foster's amply groove-centric "Mystic Brew" and infuses the piece with his own kind of elegant funk: grounded yet high-flying, calculated yet freewheeling. Iyer will be one of many artists appearing at the Haiti Benefit Concert tonight at Le Poisson Rouge. All of the proceeds from the concert will go to organizations working on the ground in Haiti in the aftermath of the January 12 earthquake.
