Playing at: Arthur's Tavern
(57 Grove St., West Village)
Get: Tickets One-drink minimum | Directions

Japanese jazz pianist Eri Yamamoto grew up a bit of a musical prodigy, but she wasn't playing jazz. Yamamoto began studying classical piano when she was 3, and by the time she was 8, she was composing her own pieces. She continued to study classical music until, during a trip to New York in 1995, she first heard the late jazz pianist Tommy Flanagan. Yamamoto has been entranced by jazz ever since. "Secret Link," from Yamamoto"s latest release In Each Day, Something Good, finds the elegant piano player easing through a witty and sophisticated original composition with her trio of bassist Dave Ambrosio and drummer Ikuo Takeuchi. When she's not on tour, Yamamoto and her trio can be found playing Arthur's Tavern every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
