Since writing the music and lyrics for last year's off-Broadway production of Coraline, Magnetic Fields mastermind Stephin Merritt has been maintaining quite a bit of visibility. The new Magnetic Fields album Realism dropped in January, the band is in the middle of an international tour, and a documentary about the group is set to premiere at SXSW this month. Maybe the film will reveal the inspiration for this folky track's embittered lyrics: "I want you crawling back to me/down on your knees yeah/like an appendectomy/sans anesthesia." Then again, we are talking about indie pop's favorite grouch.
