Percussionist Jim Black came to New York in 1991 to make his mark on the avant-garde jazz scene. And he did; by the middle of the decade, Black had established a reputation as one of the most creative drummers in the downtown music arena. So it's no surprise that Black joined up with clarinetist Chris Speed, guitarist and saz player Brad Shepik and bassist Skuli Sverrisson to explore Middle Eastern and Eastern European music as the quartet Pachora (pronounced pa-KOR-ah). This hypnotic track from the group's album Astereotypical highlights Black's distinctive polyrhythmic take on a Balkan beat. Black's appearance with Pachora tonight is part of the Rose Live Music Drummer Led Series.
