Tonight, the Blue Note kicks off a string of Roy Haynes' 85th birthday party performances, with a special MC appearance by Bill Cosby. Haynes was born in 1925 in Roxbury, a suburb outside Boston, and started playing professionally at 17. He went on to play with Miles Davis and Charlier Parker, and later Chick Corea and Stan Getz. This classic jazz song, originally off of the veteran percussionist's album When It's Haynes It Roars and also found on the three-disc retrospective A Life in Time – The Roy Haynes Story, begins with a drum solo and then chugs along steadily as Haynes and Co. show off their chops.
