It's no surprise that Tom Waits is a fan of Texas-bred singer-songrwiter Jolie Holland. The Southwestern songbird, who shares a record label with Waits, sings with an Americana rootsiness coupled with a freewheeling, jazzy quality. On this opener from her album The Living and the Dead, Holland addresses the ghost of beat generation icon Jack Kerouac as she eases through a country-tinged tune. Tonight, Holland appears on a double bill alongside Rain Machine, a.k.a. Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio.

I like the way the song opens up with the pronouncement "I've just got back from Mexico City" - Al of 'Kerouac Beat_Happening'.
