In the more than 10 years since multi-instrumentalist Eric Johnson formed the Fruit Bats, the indie rock band has gone from being Johnson's side project to his main focus and back to being a side project. This was due to Johnson's involvement with other bands: he was once a member of the Chicago group I Rowboat, and he's served as a sideman for Vetiver and the Shins. Johnson typically had most of the creative control for past Fruit Bats albums, but for last year's The Ruminant Band, Johnson let his group do some of the driving (the fact that Johnson has formally joined the Shins may have had something to do with this). On this warm and winsome title track, the five-piece group takes some cues from '70s bands, expanding a folky melody into a delicately harmonized anthem -- perfect for sunny highway drives out west.
