Jazz guitarist Ralph Towner's just-released record Chiaroscuro, featuring Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, proves that late really is better than never. Towner and Fresu first met around 15 years ago, and although Towner immediately knew he wanted to work with Fresu, the two wouldn't collaborate until 2008, when they recorded Chiaroscuro. On the record's title track, Towner and Fresu play with an amity and beauty that reveals both the musicians' reams of talent and mutual admiration for each other.
