The drummer-cum-bandleader is a rare beast, female ones doubly so. Allison Miller is both, not to mention a sidewoman to the stars — in addition to a smattering of jazz acts, Miller has backed up the likes of Brandi Carlisle, Ani DiFranco, Natalie Merchant and Erin McKeown. She plays here behind the newly released (and so far, well-received) sophomore disc Boom Tic Boom. Rounding out her small ensemble are pianist Myra Melford, bassist and DiFranco band compatriot Todd Sickafoose, and the violin-slinging queen of Barbès, Jenny Scheinman.
