If Jason Moran wasn’t already juiced enough from being dubbed “the future of jazz” on a daily basis, the MacArthur Foundation decided to give the 35-year-old jazz pianist one of its $500,000 no-strings-attached “Genius” awards last week. Moran says he plans on using the money to take a break from his touring schedule to travel to West Africa for musical inspiration, among other things. Tonight Moran begins a six-day residency at the Village Vanguard with his backing band, the Bandwagon. “Gangsterism Over 10 Years” is the latest recording in Moran’s Gangsterism series, which is based on art made by Jean-Michel Basquiat.
