Saturday night, the Brooklyn quintet Friends wraps up a 29-date U.S. tour with another artist on the band's label, Darwin Deez. The concert is a month before Friends releases its debut single “Friend Crush,” which is available as a download above. The band’s self-described musical concoction mixes one part “weird-pop” and one part “tropicool” with African-inspired rhythms that splash over the rim of a glass. Lead singer Samantha Urbani pulled the band together with a pack of (what else?) friends in time for New York’s CMJ Music Festival last fall. The band’s got a bead on the Caribbean vibe and has hopes for filling a hole in the current indie-pop scene. “I am hoping we will dominate the search engine,” says Urbani. “There’s definitely space in pop music right now for something more genuine.”
