Don’t let the shiny Stratocaster and fancy guitar licks fool you: Omara “Bombino” Moctar isn’t about rock 'n' roll. Bombino comes from the desert town of Agadez in the central Saharan nation of Niger, and he blends traditional Tuareg trance music with international sounds often known as “desert blues.”
From an adolescence spent in refugee camps in Algeria to an adulthood in exile in West Africa, Bombino’s life has been touched by decades of geopolitical turmoil in the Sahara region. That history works its way subtly into Bombino’s music, which combines deep grooves with serious guitar chops. His international debut album has earned some wild superlatives from critics, including one VivoScene reviewer who wrote, “If you never buy another record in your life, buy Agadez.”
Bombino hits LPR this weekend as part of his first ever American tour. The experimental psychedelic rock duo NYMPH opens.
