Torontonian guitar whiz Matthew Stevens got some serious shine in the jazz world for playing on the 2010 album Yesterday You Said Tomorrow from New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott. The rock-and-pop nuanced album led to a performance with the Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, among other things. On the album, Stevens’ ethereal guitar textures stray from jazz orthodoxy. On his own recordings, he keeps that mellow feel going. Check out this 12-minute version of the standard “Iris,” in which an understated Stevens weaves rectangular guitar mazes both melodic and modern at the same time.
