John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood have been performing together for over 20 years now. But that doesn’t stop them from trying new things. Medeski Martin and Wood’s live performances have become legendary for their exploratory nature – something apparent on their latest live album, Free Magic.
Having crossed genre lines in a way few Jazz groups can claim, the group recorded Free Magic in a setting they so rarely enjoy on the jam-band circuit with its electric instruments and short set times. The album was recorded live with entirely acoustic instruments, and the trio felt compelled to explore at whatever length they desire. Thsi spirit of experimentation is evident on the leadoff track of the album, "Doppler," which you can download here.
Look below to watch a live video of Medeski, Martin and Wood playing in a more electric setting. The Trio plays The Blue Note Thursday night.
