Meshell Ndegeocello’s music isn’t easily classified. Her recordings shift through genres at will, but are always centered around her sultry voice and introspective lyrics. Ndegeocello’s latest album is a tribute to a legend who shares those same traits with her: Nina Simone.
Ndegeocello got some help from Cody Chestnutt in covering Nina Simone’s “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black” for the album, entitled Pour Une Ame Souvraine. Download it here, and watch a video of her performing "See Line Woman," another Simone cover, below. Ndegeocello will play a Nina Simone tribute set at the Highline Ballroom Tuesday night.
