Alfredo Rodriguez Trio
Qbafrica
Playing on Tuesday at The Jazz Standard
Get: Tickets ($20) | Directions
Twenty-six-year-old Cuban pianist and composer Alfredo Rodríguez got his start as a kid playing in his family’s band. But in 2006, he met -- and performed for -- producer Quincy Jones, the guy who produced Michael Jackson’s Thriller and so much more. Now, Jones has co-produced Rodriguez’s debut album, and the track "Qbafrica" was written as a tribute to him.
Download "Qbafrica" -- and check out the Trio's performance of the song "Cu-bop" at the Akron Art Museum.

This show was sub par. Afredo is a text book musician with seldom moments of cutting loose toward a music-soul we call jazz. His show was over priced at $20, too short at :50 mins long - I thought he was going to pause before getting into the meat of business - NOT, instead he was ready to cut out. On Tuesday morning WNYC announced this gig alert as including a hommage score to Quincy Jones - there was no such score preformed. The wonderful track played on the radio sound bite was not played nor the energy matched by any of the live peices preformed. The venue is somewhat santized and absent of the warmth one expects from a jazz joint for jazz people. I asked a bartender if i peek at a menu - he stated that the Maitre d' could help me with that... I should have gone to the village.
Yeah! Soundcheck is back! Excellent.
