ARTIST: Companion
DOWNLOAD: "Homegirl"
SHOW: Thursday at Glasslands ($10)
Brooklyn-based musician Pepi Ginsberg used to play solo. But now the singer has surrounded herself with collaborators, and formed the band Companion. The group makes whimsical art pop that’s an adventure to listen to.
Today's download sums up the band's adventurous bent over the course of 4.25 shapeshifting minutes. What starts as an exhibition of nimble guitar work quickly changes to a mid-tempo pop experiment. The song fluctuates constantly but never feels forced or headed in a direction it shouldn't. The result is a song that breathes freely and easily, at its own pace, in its own style, like a good set of lungs.
Download "Homegirl" above, and watch the video for the band's song "Only" below. Companion celebrates the release of their debut album at Glasslands Thursday night.
