December is John Schaefer Month at WNYC. All month long, we'll be celebrating John's 30 years at the station and we need your help.
We are asking you, John's listeners, to tell us about a time when John exposed you to music you otherwise wouldn’t have heard. In radio parlance, these are known as “driveway moments.” Our version: a time when something on the radio or at a concert John hosted just kind of blew you away, a "Schaefer Moment."
There are two ways in which you may participate: leave a comment below, or call us at 1.646.493.7939 and leave a recorded message about your "Schaefer Moment."
Here's a "Schaefer Moment" from Rosanne Cash:
"I know nothing about Brazilian jazz singers. It's an embarrassing hole in my musical understanding. But one day, I caught John interviewing the great Luciana Souza and I was mesmerized from the first moment of the conversation. I learned so much from that show--not only about her, but about the history of the music and the richness of the tradition. I learned a lot about John as well. I thought I knew the depth and breadth of his musical knowledge and the fluidity with which he can cross genres and speak to the specifics of each, but I developed a whole new respect for him after that interview. It was a revelation."
