Soundcheck's Video Contest, Starring the Fiery Furnaces

Thursday, June 11, 2009 - 02:00 PM

We want you to make the next Fiery Furnaces video. Grab their single "The End is Near" (from their new album I'm Going Away) here for free, play it a couple (hundred) times, then launch your favorite video editing program and get going! You've got until 11:59pm on August 31 to perfect your vision.

Entries will be judged by director Rik Cordero of Three/21 Media, who has made videos for Jay-Z, Wale, Nas, the Roots and Q-Tip, among many others. The winning director will appear live on the show with both Cordero and the Fiery Furnaces in September.

Requirements:

  • Upload your video to YouTube
  • Visit the Soundcheck Video Contest YouTube group page and click on "Join This Group"
  • Once you've joined, click "Add Videos"
  • Check the box next to your Fiery Furnaces video and then click the "Add to Group" button
  • That's it, you're done.

Make sure to include contact information in either your YouTube profile or video description so we can get in touch. If any of this doesn't make sense, let us know at soundcheck [at] wnyc.org.

Making the Video:

If you're less than familiar with the movie-editing software on your computer, here are a few links that should help you get acquainted.

Many new Macs come with either iMovie or Final Cut Express included, and both will work fine for this project.

If you own a PC, you might have Windows Movie Maker. Here's a link to an introduction to that program:

UPDATE: We're also soliciting tips from some of our favorite music video directors and animators:

Tip No. 1: Andrew Bird animator John Kuramoto on animating a video

Tip No. 2: White Rabbits director Andrew Droz Palermo on making your first video

Tip No. 3: Brooklyn director of the moment Timothy Saccenti on keeping it simple.

Tip No. 4: Directing duo Radical Friends on the use of natural light.

Tip No. 5: Cartoonist Doug Savage on stop-action video.

Tip No. 6: Saccenti returns with tips on coming up with ideas.

Tip No. 7: Gnarls Barkley director Wendy Morgan on being assertive.

Tip No. 8: Moby endorses non-professionalism.

And if you need any tips on the contest itself, or have any questions at all, drop us a line at soundcheck@wnyc.org. We're happy to help.
