Who SPIN Missed: Listeners Weigh In

Friday, May 25, 2012 - 05:18 PM

Our segment on SPIN's new "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" list got a lot of feedback - some vitriolic, some snarky, and some supportive. What nearly every comment had, though, was a name of someone who was overlooked in SPIN's list. Here's a Spotify playlist featuring just a few of the "unsung guitar heroes" suggested in the comments.

I still don't quite understand why Buckethead doesn't get some mention, he has more dexterity on the strings than I hear from most guitarists. Granted he uses a lot of loops.

Schaeffer!!

Is there a version of "Genle On My Mind" where Glen Campbell actually plays it?

In three versions on youtube, other guitar player(s) do the accompaniament. Glenn Campbell even takes both hands off the instrument.

That has to be on the same level as Spins listing a DJ as a guitar player.

You must be joking!

See the following, and notice the musicality, the command of the insrument, the time, the harmony, and not least of all the joyous creativity of it.

If you can even mention Vai after seeing that, you are beyond hope.

I did not see any mention of Hendrix, but I probably missed that, b/c that has to be there.

But my vote is for Pet Cosey, who played with Miles from 73 - 75.
