Chef Eddie Huang. Chef Eddie Huang. (Atisha Paulson)

Chef Eddie Huang, author of the acclaimed new memoir, Fresh Off the Boat, and rapper Heems, formerly of the indie hip-hop trio Das Racist, join John Schaefer and WNYC's Soundcheck for an afternoon of food, music and conversation about embracing cultural mashups and defying stereotypes — musical or otherwise — facing first-generation Americans.

Fresh Off the Boat, Huang's new memoir, is a hilarious and honest reflection on a childhood spent growing up in Florida as the son of Taiwanese immigrants. Host John Schaefer will talk with the bad boy restaurateur once referred to as "the Flavor Flav of the downtown dining scene" about his book and his lifelong passion for hip-hop. The afternoon will also include a live performance from Heems (a.k.a. Himanshu Suri). His latest mixtape, Wild Water Kingdom, was released late last year.
