Matthew Dear, that beloved purveyor of smart, space-age pop, got his start making Detroit-style minimal techno with Leave Luck to Heaven in 2003. Since then, he’s released a handful of solo albums and a bucketful of remixes for the xx, Hot Chip, and others. This August, Dear put out Black City, a noir-ish concept album about a sleepless city of the futuristic present. This song, “Slowdance,” comes from that album, and features a droning beat, heart-warming synths, and and Dear’s everpresent bass drawl.
