As the musical director of the New York Philharmonic from 1971 to 1977 and one of the 20th century’s most celebrated composers, Pierre Boulez has long been a cherished figure in the New York City classical music community. This year, the composer turns 85, and the Miller Theater will celebrate his birthday with a concert of Boulez's work performed by Talea Ensemble, a chamber ensemble of young virtuosos, which is dedicated to new, experimental pieces. Earlier this year, the group made this recording of Boulez’s serialist work for small ensemble, “Dérive 1,” and they’ll play it again tonight. Boulez himself will be on deck to speak about the music.
