Rez Abbasi

Rez Abbasi
"Lament"
Playing at: Cornelia Street Cafe
(29 Cornelia St., Greenwich Village)
Info: Tickets ($15) | Directions

Pakistani-American guitarist Rez Abbasi is one of those modern jazz musicians who effortlessly drifts between seemingly disparate musical worlds. For example, in addition to performing in two of star saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa's award-winning groups (Indo-Pak Coalition and Kinsmen), he's also the producer behind the sumptuous South Asian world-pop of Kiran Ahluwalia. Plus, he's a skilled composer in his own right as he'll demonstrate tonight at Cornelia, performing new music commissioned from Chamber Music America with Mahanthappa and Vijay Iyer. On this track, "Lament," from this year's Natural Selection, Abbasi gives a classic Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan qawwali tune a modern jazz treatment, backed up by repeating figures on the vibraphone and rich melodies bowed on the double bass.
