The Congolese daughter to a diplomat father and a sociologist mother, L.A.-born singer Rafiya grew up traveling the far reaches of the world—Congo, the Cape Verde Islands, Senegal and Barbados just to name a few. It was while being educated in these nations and being exposed to local musical artisans that Rafiya absorbed and developed her authentic Afro-soul sound. The track “Mario” is her remake of the Congolese classic of the same name. Singing in both English and French, Rafiya’s soprano dances between island influenced percussion, a harmonized chorus and delicate strings.
