Nowadays, there’s no shortage of excellent retro-soul bands regularly appearing on New York City stages, from Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings to The Del-Reys to the Budos Band. Eli “Paperboy” Reed distinguishes himself in one important way: he’s making vintage sounding funk on a major label. Reed is a baby-faced white kid from Boston with a supernaturally golden voice that contends with any of the old-school soul heroes he imitates. With the backing of Capitol Records, he’s gotten a wide release and critical acclaim for his big label debut Come And Get It, a tasty collection of songs that pair delicate arrangements with manic tempos and a wild enthusiasm.
