Many people are familiar with the music and scribblings of the New York mixologist Jace Clayton, who performs under the name DJ /rupture. But lesser known is that Clayton is the leader of a live band called Nettle. In Nettle, Clayton makes beats and bleeps on a laptop while four other players accompany on cellos and banjos, among other instruments. The resulting sound is a mix of folk and club music that brings to mind North Africa and South Brooklyn at the same time. This summer, Nettle is set to release El Resplandor: The Shining in Dubai, a sonic re-imagining of Kubrick’s film, set in a luxury hotel in Dubai. Download “Nakhil” above, which is a remix of a track by fellow beatsmith Maga Bo. Nettle opens for Malian chanteuse Khaira Arby.
