Fresh off the release of his acclaimed fifth album, the one-man electronic act known as Four Tet stopped by Le Poisson Rouge last week. We've got the whole show for you right here.
Before You Press Play
The Facts: The world of ambient electronica can feel like an awfully cold place sometimes. After all, there's only so much humanity you can ascribe to a scene full of skinny dudes hunched over laptops, blasting out music that is oblique, repetitive, and occasionally downright menacing. With the new album There is Love in You, Kieran Hebden, a.k.a. Four Tet, proves himself the rare electronic artist content to do without all that grim austerity. He may not look up at his audience all that much when he performs, but from the mess of wires and monitors in his stage setup comes a warm, inviting wash of sound bearing an undeniably human touch.
The Sound: That familiar four-on-the-floor techno stomp, overlaid with a colorful mix of digital textures and live instrument samples.
Latest Release: There is Love In You (2010) on Domino Records.
He Said, She Said: "Over the course of a truly inspired career, London’s Four Tet has remained ahead of the curve, sidestepping obsolescence by folding new strains of sound into his already rich jazz/hip-hop/folk base." - Chris Martins, The A.V. Club
"[There is Love in You] isn't fist-pumping music that toys with the pleasure of pop music, like one of my favorite Four Tet tunes, "Smile Around the Face." And it's not an album that bowls you over with the density and intricacy of its textures. Instead, it's both heady and physical, subtle but powerful music for thinking and moving or ideally doing both at the same time: It's been a while since a brisk walk through the city sounded this good." - Mark Richardson, Pitchfork Media
