In Studio: Tony Allen

Monday, April 11, 2011

The great Nigerian bandleader Fela Kuti had a not-so-secret weapon when he was creating the funk-infused style known as Afrobeat in the 1970s. That weapon was drummer Tony Allen. A legend among drummers of all styles, Allen is still going strong and has released an album with his own group. He joins us to play live.

When souncheck conducted its greatest musicians all time, circa 2006 ?, Led Zeppelin swept every catagory including greatest drummer, I must admit i voted for Carl Palmer of ELP fame, however due to ignorance, I didnt know Tony Allen well enough to put him in with the greatest drummers of all time. I now know, and Tony does belong !
